Hey Everyone,
So I have a question. Why is it that every top critic is male?
When Brave first came out, I went and saw it with my mom and came back telling her she had to see it. We looked up showtimes and reviews, and every critic gave it a so so review. Of course, almost every critic who reviewed the movie also happened to be male.
I found this irritating because Brave was a movie that centered around a mother-daughter relationship. Call me crazy, but most male reviewers probably don't understand that. After that I looked up specifically female reviews of Brave almost every female critic gave it a better review than their male counterparts.
Here's some quotes, courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes
"The story, with its patchwork of plots (involving feuding clans and disastrous spells), holds together enough to thrill intermittently." - Bruce Diones (New Yorker)
"The Pixar name used to mean something. And it never quite meant pleasantly safe, safely forgettable movies like this." - Stephen Whitty (Newark Star-Ledger)
"Saying that Brave is entertaining but not astonishing is pretty much admitting your straight-A student got a B" - Lisa Kennedy (Denver Post)
I know this is all correlational, but it still got my hackles up a little bit.
See y'all later.
Emma
